Lesser Town Bridge Towers

Lesser Town Bridge Towers

Two towers i.e. lower and higher Lesser Town Bridge Towers, rise on Charles Bridge towards the Lesser Town.

Lower Lesser Town Bridge Tower is built of marlite and used to be part of the left bank fortification. An interesting fact is that at the end of 15th century a prison for the hardest offenders was established in the tower. It also served as custom office since the end of 16th century. A little house called customs has been placed right next to the tower.

The Tower has belonged to the city of Prague since 1896. Now it is closed for the public.

Higher Lesser Town Bridge Tower follows the concept of Parler’s Old Town Bridge Tower. It was built in 1464 and the costs were covered by George of Poděbrady. The building material of the tower was large sandstone blocks. The tower used to be a watchtower and a warehouse.

It is open for the public.
